The hospital’s high-voltage power infrastructure has been upgraded to meet current and future electricity needs across the campus.
The upgrade has included improvements to the site’s two electrical transformers, introduction of a full power back-up system and the installation of new technology for control systems.
Further equipment upgrades for the new hospital building are due to be completed by next month.
Western Sydney Local Health District chief executive Danny O’Conner said the Westmead redevelopment would double the precinct’s power capacity.
“Rapid expansion of clinical and research facilities over the last decade has significantly increased the requirement for reliable power sources,” he said.
The switch-on is part of ongoing early project works, which have included critical upgrades to water, power, gas and other essential services.
New cooling towers will also be installed on the hospital’s roof in the coming months.
The Westmead redevelopment aims to transform the precinct into an innovative, contemporary and integrated centre, which will continue to deliver high-quality healthcare for decades to come.
