Free program for separating, divorcing parents with young children

A UNIQUE online program for couples separating and divorcing and having children aged 12 and under has been developed by experts and is now available across Australia.

Triple P Online, developed by Triple P-Positive Parenting Program, is an easy-to-use resource giving proven tips and strategies to manage family breakdowns involving children.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 49,000 couples were granted divorce in 2022 alone.

Clinical psychologist and co-author of Family Transitions Triple P, Dr Helen Stallman, said the program was based on findings that difficult divorces involve children, mostly aged 18 and younger.

"Parenting can be challenging at the best of times. Add separation or divorce on top of that, and it can become even harder,” Dr Stallman said.

“It's normal for parents and carers to feel concerned about how this big life change may affect their child.

“In the program, parents get evidence-based tips and strategies to avoid common parenting traps, help kids adjust, manage emotions and co-parent effectively.

But while the program recognises the tough times for a couple and their children, Triple P Online can suggest mechanisms for coping, evolving and moving forward in a new family dynamic.

"The research shows divorce itself isn't harmful to children. It's how parents and carers manage the transition through separation and divorce that has the potential to negatively impact children," Dr Stallman said.

Having free access to Triple P Online will help many more parents and carers navigate this pivotal time more confidently.

“Whether one or both parents do the program, it can make a difference, with practical tips and strategies to use now and in the future,” Dr Stallman said.

"Like all of Triple P's free online parenting programs, it can assist parents and carers in navigating the ups and downs, boosting their confidence, and helping them to raise happy, resilient and capable children.”

More than 300,000 parents and carers across Australia, including millions across the world,  have benefited from the trusted online help of Triple P Positive Parenting Program, Dr Stallman said.

The program has been evaluated and shown to effectively reduce child behaviour concerns and coercive parenting practices.

The program also helps to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety, anger among divorcing parents, and reduce co-parenting animosities.

The free online resource for divorcing families is funded through the Department of Health and Aged Care’s Parenting Education and Support Program.
