The aim is to expand the UWS medical faculty to accommodate the state-of-the-art structure that includes a library, teaching spaces, lecture theatre, practical rooms, study space and offices.
UWS students currently divide their time between the School of Medicine — opened at Campbelltown campus in 2008 at a cost of $47.5 million — and the Clinical School at Campbelltown Hospital.
‘‘This is a really exciting development for us (and) it puts us on equal footing with every other medical teaching department in the country,” Professor Hennessy said.
‘‘We are looking forward to the day when we have a professor on the staff who is a graduate of the university.’’
No timeline for the application has been indicated, but Professor Hennessy hoped the building would be complete within the next few years.
The Joint Regional Planning Panel will determine the development.
