An Aerotropolis can be defined as “a multimodal freight and passenger transportation complex which supports efficient, cost-effective, sustainable development in a defined region of economic significance cantered around a major airport.”
Together, in partnership with government and industry, UWS would help optimise the employment and economic development opportunities that Sydney’s second airport would bring, the university said.
“As the Airport City [Badgerys Creek is within the Liverpool local government area] Liverpool is seeing unprecedented development and growth across all sectors, including education and research,” Mayor, Ned Mannoun, said at the announcement by Premier, Mike Baird, of an expansion of UWS in Liverpool.
“I’m proud to announce the University of Western Sydney will establish a state-of-the-art Higher Education Centre in the heart of Liverpool in 2016,” Mr Baird said.
“Liverpool is one of Sydney’s fastest growing and most dynamic cities (and) this new centre will further complement the strong education and health sector that is already in Liverpool.
“The city is at the forefront of health and medical research, with the Ingham Institute’s ground-breaking cancer research and Liverpool Hospital one of the largest hospitals in the Southern Hemisphere.”
UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover, said the centre would comprise technology-rich teaching spaces, regionally targeted postgraduate offerings, the Centre for Western Sydney and a “Launch Pad” Smart Business Centre,
The up to 1000-square-metre facility, on a site to be decided in the CBD, would accommodate over 150 students, staff and corporate partners in a flexible and highly-innovative workspace.
The university expects to upgrade its presence in Liverpool over the coming years.
