New rules for close contact
A MASSIVE spike in COVID-19 cases including the Omicron variant in Western Sydney has led to an immediate change in rules and regulations implemented by the State Government.
The NSW Government will adopt nationally consistent principles for the definition of a close contact and isolation periods for COVID positive cases and remove mandatory PCR testing requirements for international arrivals. 
Following the National Cabinet meeting, NSW will immediately implement the new arrangements for COVID cases and contacts. 
In the meantime, thousands of new cases were recorded right across the west:
  • Parramatta Local Government area had 2522 cases from 87052 tests
  • Blacktown had 4931 cases from 159,961 tests
  • The Hills Shire had 2620 cases from 88,753 tests
  • Fairfield 3416 cases from 80,847 tests
  • Penrith 2549 cases from 88,660 tests
  • Hawkesbury 350 cases from 24,777 tests
  • Cumberland 4423 cases from 109,461 tests
  • Ryde 1571 cases  from 49,621 tests cases from 
  • Canterbury Bankstown 7634 cases from 165,796 tests
  • Canada Bay 1578 cases from 41239 tests
  • Liverpool 3612 cases from 97,881 tests
  • Strathfield 936 cases from 26,206 tests
Long queues formed at COVID testing sites across the West as chemists ran out of test kits. Many people ignored advice to stay away unless they were showing symptoms or required the test as part of their medical treatment
