Making the occasion even more special is the fact that the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery is the only Sydney venue for the exhibition, which traces the development of contemporary photographic practice over the last 50 years.
Gallery Director, Diana Robson says, Remain in Light crosses a range of media including black and white photography, artist books, photolithography and digital photography, and brings together around 70 works.
It presents Australian photographers alongside international, and draws on works from both the MCA Collection and the JW Power Collection.
“Viewed collectively, these works convey how photography has been at the centre of critical debates and themes throughout late 20th and 21st century art,” Diana said.
“From the photo-document to mass-produced imagery, through to the rise of online platforms like Flickr and Instagram for image distribution, Remain in Light looks at how traditional genres of photographic practice have been reinvigorated.”
The MCA Collection consists of more than 4,000 works acquired since the constitution in 1989 of the Museum of Contemporary Art.
The MCA also manages the Power Collection on behalf of the University of Sydney, which contains over 3,000 works brought together since the late 1960s through the JW Power Bequest.
Hawkesbury Regional Gallery is located at Deerubbin Centre (1st Floor), 300 George St Windsor. Phone 4560 4441.
