New theatre to attract independent productions

THE conversion of the Pioneer Room into a 346-seat boutique theatre will be a cultural addition to the Castle Hill Town Centre, says to Hills Shire Mayor Cr Andrew Jefferies.

With Council's revcent adoption of the Cultural Action Plan, Mayor Jefferies said he was excited to a provide cost effective solution for the performing arts community.

“This Council has a strong record of financial and asset management and we’ve identified an opportunity to create a theatre in a prime location using a building we already own,” Mayor Jefferies said.

“We believe that opportunities exist for independent theatre to thrive at a location within the Castle Hill Town Centre.”

“Residents and visitors can go to Castle Hill Main Street for a meal, glass of wine or cup of coffee before walking a few hundred metres down the road to catch a show.

“The new theatre will be a real win for performing arts groups, businesses, residents and visitors.”

Mayor Jefferies said that the new theatre was not a replacement for The Hills Centre but was specifically targeted towards demand for independent and smaller scale theatre productions.

“The transformation of the Pioneer room maintains our Council's position of being conservative and responsible with the expenditure of ratepayer funds."

Mayor Jefferies said the Cultural Action Plan specified the further enhancement of the Castle Hill Showground which may potentially include a multi-purpose arena.

“There may be an opportunity for a multi-purpose facility in the future subject to financial viability and demand driven analysis, but with the Showground study still being conducted, there are no plans set in stone at this stage.”
