MO’S RIDING A WAVE OF GOOD KARMA

Blacktown events promoter tackles risks head on

By James Preston

EVERY successful entrepreneur must take a risk. They must leap hurdles, dodge pitfalls and be prepared to play with fire and in this sense Western Sydney entertainment mogul Mohammed Alhaj Al Gala is a man who can only be described as a pyromaniac.

The 26-year-old originally hailing from Saudi Arabia, has built an empire in a few short years with his Blacktown based events business called KARMA Promotions - the flagship of his accomplishments.

Mo, as he is better known, is a hardworking, charismatic entrepreneur who is living proof that dedication, passion and persistence are the key foundations of success.

Having a life long love for music, entertainment and events Mo finally followed his calling in 2008 when, in a bid to learn the trade, he worked as an assistant for a number of promoters and companies to bring the likes of RnB superstars Usher and Chris Brown to Australia.

“I was a sponge. I wanted to learn everything I could and I was not afraid to sacrifice time and money to ensure that my contributions would be noted. Promoting is an extremely competitive and risky business and it does indeed take the whole team to ensure an events success” he said.

“At that point in time, that’s what I was – I was not the time piece but an essential cog in the success of the operation,” said Mo.

The success of these tours and the knowledge he attained during a draining two-year period gave Mo the inspiration and experience to risk creating his own promotion company, and in early 2010 KARMA Promotions was born.

In the space of three short years KARMA Promotions has gone from an unknown to becoming one of Sydney’s and indeed, Australia’s top promotional companies.

Mo and his team at KARMA Promotions, which has amassed hundreds of people across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia has been responsible for supplying acclaimed international talent such as Craig David, 112 and US Billboard topping rappers Tyga, Bow Wow and Kid Ink.

Mo’s savvy in assessing the demands for certain artists and his professionalism in presenting them to the public has led to continued and ever growing success for KARMA Promotions so much so that he has experienced little to no adversity in the growth of his business.

“There is always a lot of money at stake – it is an extremely high risk but high reward business. At KARMA Promotions we have yet to endure an unsuccessful tour. The closest we have come was less than ideal tickets sales of 112’s concert in Brisbane, but as a whole even that tour was exceptionally well received,” he said.

Most recently Mo was responsible for bringing Grammy nominated and two time US Billboard Album topper Ja Rule to Australia for shows along the entire east coast.

“That was a fantastic tour. There was such a buzz. It had been around a decade since Ja Rule had performed in Australia and the response was tremendous,” he said.

One thing that has helped set apart KARMA Promotions apart and assist the tremendous rise of the company is Mo’s willingness to offer opportunities to people hungry to prove themselves in the business.

“I have an ever-growing team of street promoters, social media promoters, graphic artists, DJ’s and support artists. I am happy to give them a shot if they can show me their desire,” he said.

“People might think it is risky to take on these promoters and artists who do not have a great deal of experience or a big name – but that is exactly the point; they are all out trying to make a name for themselves and at the end of the day this means they will be willing to give 100 per cent.

“I would rather have passionate driven rookies then those willing to skate by on their reputation.”

KARMA Promotions has helped kick start the careers of artists such as DJ Nik Nak, Toy Boy, Zee, Lil Soulja, Preston, Gabreal and Joey Dee amongst others.

Aside from offering opportunities to aspiring artists and promoters Mo is starting to delve into philanthropy now that his business ventures have become more established.

“I was given a start myself, I have offered opportunities to others but now I am looking to offer opportunities to the less fortunate and give back to the community which has given me so much.”

Mo plans to donate a healthy percentage of ticket sales from future events to disabled children’s organizations and those suffering from both cancer and diabetes.

“I strongly believe in karma. I love the ideology and that played a huge part in deciding the name of my business. If you do good or bad you will be dually rewarded by your actions. I live by that ethos” he explains.

KARMA Promotions has also expanded beyond concert tours with the company offering private boat parties, modeling services and striking up a partnership with Kings Cross club Sin Citi.

“KARMA Saturdays at Sin Citi have become a raging success in a very short amount of time. It is a new club and they reached out to me to ensure they could compete with the established venue’s in the region,” said Mo.

Like all smart businessmen Mo has not thrown all his eggs in one basket.

Mo is also the director of ‘Excellent Training Institute” which provides security licensing, RSA and RCG courses, training for security personnel and is developing to offer childcare, aged care and business management courses for the public.

“Running Excellent Training Institute ties in well with the work of KARMA Promotions. I can handpick security personnel that I myself have approved in the past to provide safety at concerts, events and Sin Citi and it doesn’t hurt to know a few blokes for free entry when I need to unwind” he laughs.

With Mo’s empire both established and rapidly growing I couldn’t help but ponder what the ultimate goal for his business ventures were.

“I want KARMA Promotions to be the biggest promotions company in Australia and I want it to be a company that also gives back to the community who has helped its success.  For me it is about prosperity for anyone who becomes involved with KARMA.”

For a man riding a wave of good karma it is hard to picture anything but prosperity on the horizon for Mo.
