DRIVERS BEWARE DURING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Double demerit points in holiday season
NSW Police will be out in force during the Easter break prompting a Sydney lawyer to issue a warning to motorists as double demerit points apply.

Double demerits will be in place from Thursday, 17 April 2025 until Monday,  April 21 2025 inclusive for all speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.

A second double demerits period will be in effect from Thursday 24 April 2025 until Sunday 27 April 2025

During the public holidays, driving offences that attract double demerit points include speeding, improper use of seatbelts, not utilising motorcycle helmets and use of mobile phones.

“If you cop a peek at your mobile phone and are caught by the cameras, you lose 10 points immediately during the double demerit points period,” Sydney traffic lawyer, Mathew Nott, said.

“If you have a couple of minor offences sitting on your record, you will lose your licence if a double demerit pushes you above the 13 demerit point limit that is your allocated licence limit.”

A double demerit doubles the original demerit point allocated for committing a driving offence, however, the fine does not increase.

“You can appeal any infringement but it costs money.

“The chance for having your fine withdrawn is minimal, only about three per cent of internal review contested by with Service NSW result in an infringement being overturned,” Mr Nott said.

“You are entitled as of right to make a court election which can be done through the RMS website.”
